WG1 (JPEG/JBIG) 60th Meeting

January 18th – 19th and 21st, 2013 Lausanne, Switzerland

Location

The 60th JPEG Meeting and its ad-hoc meetings will take place in Lausanne and will be hosted from the by Ecole Polytechnique Federal de Lausanne (EPFL) which is one of the two Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology. Ad-hoc meetings will take place on 18-19 January 2013 and the WG1 meeting, including its plenary will take place on 21st January 2013. The meetings on 18-19 January 2013 will be collocated with STAR 2013, the Second Workshop on Standards and Technologies for multimedia Archives and Records. During STAR 2013, a special session on 20th anniversary of JPEG image compression system standard is also organized, where various presentations will be made by experts involved in the original JPEG project. Another special session on JPEG during STAR 2013 will also discuss latest developments and extensions of JPEG standard in progress.

EPFL, in its idyllic location on the shores of Lake Geneva, brings together a campus of more than 10,000 people. Upon arrival at EPFL campus, signs will provide directions to the meeting rooms. Delegates are invited to go to the Registration Desk in near MXF1 room when arriving to EPFL for the first day of their arrival. Catering

Coffee breaks in the morning and in the afternoon are organized and included in the facility fee. Lunch is not provided to offer more flexibility to participants.

Internet access

Wireless Internet is provided inside the meeting rooms. The information to access the Internet will be provided upon arrival.

STAR 2013 and special session on JPEG 20th anniversary

STAR 2013, the Second Workshop on Standards and Technologies for multimedia Archives and Records will take place on EPFL campus 18-19 January 2013, in parallel with WG1 ad-hoc groups meetings. All WG1 delegates can attend STAR 2013 free of charge, but registration is mandatory. Detailed information about STAR 2013 and registration online form can be found at http://star.epfl.ch.

Special sessions on JPEG 20th anniversary are included in the program of STAR 2013, where past experts behind the original JPEG image compression and current key experts in JPEG committee will present various talks about insights behind the development of the original JPEG image compression standard, as well as current extensions under development. In addition, various presentations and panels on multimedia archives projects (such as Montreux Jazz Festival Digital Archives) and key components and issues relevant to multimedia archives are organized.

Social event

The social event will take place on Friday, 18th January 2013 jointly held with the social event of STAR 2013 and brings the participants to La Chalet Suisse, an authentic chalet located well above Lausanne in the Sauvabelin woods overlooking the city and the Lake Geneva. Culinary specialties from different regions of Switzerland will be served for dinner. The Social event is sponsored by STAR 2013 (ECMA International and EPFL).

 

Travel to Lausanne

Lausanne is located 60 km northeast of Geneva, and 225 km southwest of Zurich. The easiest way to reach Lausanne from either the Geneva-Cointrin Airport or the Zurich International Airport is by train. From Geneva-Cointrin Airport the train to Lausanne takes about 45 minutes. There are several connections every hour. Most of them are direct. From Zurich International Airport the train to Lausanne takes about 2.5 hours. There are two connections every hour. Some of them require changing in Biel/Bienne. There is also a direct fast train connection from Paris. Visit the CFF website for trip planning (including local transport lines).

Travel to EPFL

The EPFL campus is located 6 km west of Lausanne and is accessed most easily by metro or car.

Public transport

If you come directly from the railway station, take the metro line M2 to Lausanne-Flon (direction Croisettes), then change to metro line M1 (direction Renens). The ride on the M1 metro line from stop Lausanne-Flon to stop EPFL takes 12 minutes. The conference venue is within 5 minutes walk from the metro stop. Tickets for the bus and metro lines in Lausanne should be purchased prior to boarding, from machines located at each bus/metro stop (make sure to have coins, as bills or credit cards are often not accepted). A single ticket costs CHF 2.60 for zone 11 (just the city) and CHF 3.00 for zones 11-12 (to reach EPFL from the city), and will be valid for 1 hour (from the time of purchase) of unlimited travel on any method of transport (bus, metro, local train) within the zone. Note that most hotels provide day passes to their guests. Many hotels offer daily public transport tickets for Lausanne region for free to their guests. Please check if such a solution is available at your hotel upon check-in.

By car

On Motorway N1, follow the directions for Lausanne, then for Lausanne-Sud, and finally exit at “UNIL-EPFL”. The lake will be on your left. At the second roundabout, after a few hundred meters, enter the EPFL campus on your right. At EPFL you can find several paid parkings under the Rolex Learning Center, on the Piccard avenue (near the Polydôme) or under the Esplanade.

Visa

Participants are advised to check regulations regarding passport, visa and particularly the time required to obtain a visa. EPFL will provide an invitation letter on demand. The request for invitation letter has to be sent to the Secretariat of the meeting: [email protected]

Currency

Switzerland’s currency is the Swiss Franc (CHF) available in coins (0.01 – 5 CHF) and banknotes (10-1000 CHF). Usually the ATMs accept all major bank and credit cards and offer cash in CHF and EUR. The current exchange rates are: 1.00 CHF = 0.82 EUR = 1.07 USD.

Electricity

Switzerland operates on 220-240 volts AC, 50 Hz, with a either three pin grounded plug (type J) or a two pin ungrounded plug (type C). Type C plugs generally fit into type J sockets. However, please not that type F plugs do neither fit into type J nor type C sockets. Participants receive a universal power adapter as part of their welcome package.

Accommodation

Lausanne offers a large variety of hotels covering the whole range of categories. Below you can find a table with a selection of recommended hotels. The Starling Hotel is very close to the EPFL if you like to walk in the morning. The other hotels are in Lausanne if you prefer to stay downtown.
