JPEG INNOVATIONS EVENT

Over a trillion pictures have been created in JPEG format and this trend continues. Millions of images are shared every day among friends and family in e-mails, photo-hosting Web sites and the enormously popular social networking sites, like Facebook and Flickr, where users can even instantly upload photos taken with their mobile phone cameras. Digital photos are also widely printed at homes or through commercial printing services.

Digital technology has given photographers creative tools and many new modes of distribution. It has also contributed to the progress of e-commerce, where digital images offer new opportunities in form of products and services. One enabler of this phenomenon has been the availability of powerful and inexpensive digital cameras. An enabler of this digital imaging ecosystem has been the existence of standard image coding formats produced by the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG), a joint committee between the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Telecommunication Union’s Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T).

The nature of digital photography is changing. In addition to increasing resolution, the dynamic range of sensors in digital cameras has been increasing enabling more vivid, higher contrast and life-like color images. More recently, 3D cameras allow for creation of stereo imagery. New standards may be required to accelerate adoption of such products and services by the market, as it was the case with the original JPEG standard.

JPEG committee has created an activity called JPEG Innovations with the goal of promoting its existing standards and specifications to potential users, as well as exploring new opportunities for adoption of specifications that respond to the needs of new applications and products. JPEG Innovations workshop held in Tokyo, Japan, on Wednesday 23rd February 2011, is organized to explore such opportunities in new trends in digital photography. On one hand, the workshop will allow its participants to find out about the latest JPEG specifications that could be potentially used for emerging applications. On the other industry experts have been invited to report trends in their products and applications and to identify needs for new digital imaging standards.

JPEG committee invites you to attend this workshop to find out about visions and plans for next generation digital photography products and services, as well as plans by JPEG on timely establishment of international standards that will help accelerate adoption of new products and services by the market, benefiting industry and consumers. Solutions for extensions of existing JPEG formats allowing backward compatibility with legacy systems will be among important issues that will be addressed and discussed during the workshop.

Participation to the workshop is free of charge, prior registration is however required.
