Summary

The human visual system perceives depth using both physiological and psychological cues. While most physiological cues are based on binocular vision, psychological cues are using monocular vision. Physiological depth cues are

  • Accommodation
  • Convergence
  • Binocular parallax
  • Motion parallax

On the other hand, psychological depth cues include

  • Illumination and shadow
  • Relative sizes
  • Motion parallax
  • Aerial and linear perspective
  • Interposition
  • Texture and intensity gradients

In the real world the human visual system considers all available depth cues to determine the distance between objects. In virtual reality a 3D display is required to use both monocular and binocular cues for depth perception.
