Objective quality assessment

Summary

The goal of objective quality evaluation is to provide an automatic and reliable way to estimate the quality of multimedia data, as perceived by the user. Thereby, the target is to achieve a good correlation with the subjective quality evaluation performed by real users. In general this is achieved by integrating models of  human perception, content analysis and focus of attention.

Depending on the availability of a reference signal, 3 different approaches can e distinguished:

  • Full reference (FR): Both the reference and the processed signal are available for the quality measurement.
  • Reduced reference (RR): The quality measurement is based on processed signal and some features extracted from the reference signal.
  • No reference (NR): Only the processed signal is used for the quality measurement.
